Dear Friends of WVWC Swimming,
As the team enters the fourth year of the it faces a watershed year. This is
the first year where all team members were either recruited or have been
coached by me. From day one the team has been on-task and there is a new
sense of commitment, togetherness, and drive to succeed. It is pleasing as
a coach to wake up each morning and having the team responding to the
challenges the coaching staff presents us. The team is primed both for
individual and team success and I want to see them achieve to the top of
their ability.
The women's team is returning the core of the team from last year. The
women's team set two new school records last year and hopes to continue that
trend this year. The women's team is small but talented. When healthy and
on, we could win any event. We have a talented group of sprinters and the
50 & 100 Free, 100 Fly, and 100 Back are our best events. We added depth in
the breaststroke this year and our relays are going to continue to be
successful. We are facing some injuries on the team and are working on
dealing with those. Every girl on our team has eligibility remaining after
this year so with a strong recruiting class we can use this year as a
springboard to next year. As long as the women continue to work hard and
come together as one team, they will be at top form at the conference meet
when everything counts.
The men's team added six talented freshmen to a team that lost only two
seniors last year. We've replaced everything we lost and then some. We
added top-end swimmers to the butterfly and distance events. We've also
added to our depth across the board and it should be a successful and
exciting year for the men's team. The men set one school record last year
and are close in a number of other events. The big challenge this year is
if the men can qualify swimmers for nationals. That is the challenge I've
put forth to them; it is a lofty but achievable goal and would be a big step
for the school and program here at Wesleyan.
All in all so far this team is truly a team. We have yet to prove anything
this year and there is a lot of work to be done in the next 3 1/2 months.
I'm looking forward to an exciting year and what transpires during the
journey.
Sincerely,
Mark A. Dziak
