09-10 Alumni Meet
The Wesleyan swim team hosted their annual alumni meet on Saturday with around 15 alums returning to take part in the festivities. The meet was divided between two teams with each featuring members of the current team along with alumni.
According to head coach Mark Dziak (pictured), the meet provided an opportunity for his team to connect with past alumni.
One moment, in particular, that stood out to Dziak was the return of Mary Boyd, who was a member of Wesleyan's first women's swim team in 1974.
"It was a special moment," Dziak said. "She brought a picture of the team from back then and had a chance to meet the current women's squad. It connected the beginning of the swim program with the present day."
The meet itself provided a number of strong swims from current swimmers and alumni alike.
On the men's side, sophomore Jeff Dye bettered his conference times from last season leading-off the 200 medley relay with a 24.9 split and captured the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:55. Junior Ian Pellerin also had a strong showing with times of 21.7 in the 50 yard freestyle and 47.7 in the 100 freestyle.
For the women, sophomores Samantha Free and Maria Guillen-Munoz each recorded stand-out performances in the 50 freestyle with sub-26 second times.
The meet also gave Dziak his first look at his eight member freshman class. With the addition of this talented group, the overall team outlook is bright.
"I was pleased with the performance of our freshmen," Dziak added. "As a team, it is still only October and we have a lot of training to do but based on Saturday's results, it is going to be a good year.
And as for next year, Dziak hopes to increase the number of participating alumni to 20-30.
"Both the alumni and current swimmers had a fun time," added Dziak. "I want to continue the momentum going forward both with this year's team and the alumni as well."
